Critical dates for self-assessment and CIS tax returns

The following are the critical dates you need to understand if you are self-employed or working in the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).

Your start date, this will be the first day you started working self-employed, it’s from this date that you need to declare all your income to HMRC, this is done through your self-assessment tax return.

31 January 2019 (Deadline)

This is the date for filling your 2017/2018 tax return, if your 2017/2018 tax return isn’t submitted by midnight on 31st Jan 2019 you will receive an immediate £100 fine from HMRC which could quickly increase to £1,600+. Read here about HMRC fines.

5 April 2019

This is the last day of the 2017/2018 tax year.  Gather all your 2017/2018 payslips and business receipts and send them to us so we can start work on your tax return and reclaim any overpaid tax you have.

6 April 2019

First day of the new tax year 2019/20.

31 January 2020 (midnight) 

Deadline for online self-assessment tax returns for 2018/19 tax year.
